Message by Dato Seri Toh Soon Huat

For a society to progress and for a nation to thrive, the foundation does not lie merely in wealth or technology, but in the character, responsibility, and goodness of its people. These values shape our future and determine the direction of our nation.

Since its founding in 1901, Sian Chay Medical Institution has upheld the belief: “The Nation Progresses, Family Prospers; Family Harmony, Successful Endeavours; Forward with the Nation, Bonding with the People.”

Because I deeply understand that: “To Serve Mankind is the Best Work.” Every effort made by Sian Chay has been for the harmony of society; every act of charity, for the warmth of families; every moment of perseverance, for the next generation to grow up in a place filled with light, love, and hope.

The publication of ‘Sian Chay Good Citizen’ is guided by this aspiration. In today’s society, children grow up more at a faster pace, are exposed to more information, and face increasingly complex environments. Thus, it is even more important to nurture sound values from a young age, so that they will understand:

  • Right Mind: to discern right from wrong, guided by wisdom
  • Right Character: to be grateful, respectful, and tolerant
  • Right Action: to give, to serve and to do good for others

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all children that all fathers and mothers in the world are extraordinary.

No matter how they express it, they love you and protect you in their own ways. What children need is a heart of gratitude, an understanding of their parents’ efforts, and a respect for family bonds. Family harmony is the most precious source of strength in a child’s growth. Through storytelling, this book brings together the wisdom of Chinese culture, the principles of civic education and Sian Chay’s long-standing charitable spirit. I hope it can become a beacon in children’s lives and a bridge for families to communicate values through shard reading.

The “Sian Chay Good Citizen” is also aligned with the national vision of Healthier SG and Age Well SG. A healthy nation is not defined only by physical well-being, but also by the strength and purity of its collective heart. The future of a country does not rest on the height of its buildings, but on the light within its people.

I hope that every child, parent, and friend who reads this book will plant a seed of kindness in their lives – allowing good thoughts to take root and good deeds to flourish throughout society.

Let us work together to build Singapore into a nation that is stronger, warmer, and filled with hope – a true City of Good. Beacause:

One good citizen can brighten a family;

A community of good citizens can uplift an entire nation.

May everyone enjoy peace, family harmony, and happiness.
