Sian Chay Good Citizen

Sian Chay Medical Institution has long been committed to advancing philanthropy and values-based education. In conjunction with Singapore’s 60th year of Independence, and in support of efforts to deepen national identity, social cohesion and intergenerational values transmission. Sian Chay Medical Institution, Sian Chay Charity Centre and the Sian Chay Good Citizen Studio have jointly developed a reader titled “Sian Chay Good Citizen”. An initial print run of 200,000 copies is planned. The publication will be distributed free of charge to schools, community organisations, libraries, households and youth groups. Members of the public may also collect a copy at no cost from any Sian Chay Medical Institution’s 14 branches islandwide.

Over the past six decades, Singapore has achieved remarkable progress through good governance and the collective efforts of its people. At this new historical juncture, there is broad consensus that the nation’s long-term future depends not only on economic and technological strength, but also on the values and shared convictions upheld by its people. ’Sian Chay Good Citizen’ is introduced against this backdrop. It seeks to convey, in an accessible and engaging manner, core values such as kindness, responsibility, gratitude, integrity, respect for diversity and social responsibility — values widely shared across Singaporean society. The reader reinforces the fundamental belief that “Nation Progresses, Family Prospers; Family Harmony, Successful Endeavours”, and encourages the spirit of “We Love Singapore, Singapore We Love” to be practised in everyday life.

Designed specifically for Singaporean children and families, “Sian Chay Good Citizen” is grounded in the philosophy of holistic education. Its content progresses personal character development to family relationships, school life, social interaction and national consciousness, helping young readers understand the close connection between individual actions, social harmony and national development.

Through relatable characters and everyday scenarios drawn from diverse cultural backgrounds, the book guides readers to appreciate differences, respect diversity and value coexistence — reflecting Singapore’s long-standing emphasis on racial harmony and social inclusion.

As a century-old charitable institution, Sian Chay has long embraced the wisdom that “Good deeds are like drops of water in a pond, spreading ripples far and wide,” and that “It takes time to build character, it’s a slow and steady process.” These principles are deeply woven into its history and community work.

Sian Chay hopes that “Sian Chay Good Citizen” will be more than just a book, but a warm and shared reading experience within families. Through parent-child reading and open conversations, it aims to build bridges of communication and care. The institution believes that these seeds of kindness, once planted, will take root in young hearts, nurturing generosity of spirit and resilience of character.

In time, this inner goodness will converge into a collective light that illuminates Singapore’s future — allowing this “City of Good” to grow ever more harmonious through understanding, and ever more radiant through hope.

”Sian Chay Good Citizen“ is distributed free of charge to the public. Organisations or groups interested in bulk copies may contact the Sian Chay Good Citizen Studio.
